Facebook Messenger begins rolling out Signal protocol for end to end encryption

Facebook Messenger has started rolling out Secret Conversations, a feature that enables end to end encryption for conversations within Facebook Messenger. Secret Conversations is built on OpenWhisper Systems’ Signal strong encryption protocol and is open publicly for auditing by any external security experts.  You can also choose to set a timer to control the length of time each message you send remains visible within the conversation. Although this only applies to one on one conversations and can only be read on one device, this still marks another big leap towards privacy as the company now has it’s largest services – WhatsApp and Messenger adopting Signal’s encryption protocol.
